Weekly Debatement: Will Grizzly Bear’s Involvement in the Twilight New Moon Soundtrack Destroy Them?

October 28, 2009

This is just the sort of obscure tragedy that occurs far too often.

-Every week (hopefully!) our very own Bookcase Inspector will draw a cartoon to go along with a question that needs debatementing. Leave your opinions in the comments section.

Hell no. Thom Yorke is on it. bon Iver is on it. Nobody cares. Only overly protective teenagers who despise the franchise care and then they realize they just got a new grizzly bear song out of it. Caring about bands being on soundtracks or adverts is ultimately stupid. Rarely effets the band. Truthfully they’ll just be reaching new fans

For the record, we agree. For the most part. As I have mentioned before on this blog, I bought the Twilight New Moon soundtrack, and for the most part really liked it. The Grizzly Bear/Beach house song is amazing. But…

One must take into account what has happened to bands such as Death Cab for Cutie and the Shins in the past. And those bands were featured on soundtracks for more respectable things than the Twilight franchise. The argument is not, will Grizzly Bear fail to make any more money. They will probably make much more, which is great for them, really! But at what cost? That is the question. Will they be destroyed as artists and become money machines.

Personally, I think they will weather this out, but I want to continue to hear what other people have to say.
